Lula’s government downplayed the remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on his inauguration day that the United States does not need Brazil.

The interpretation is that the comment already reflects Trump’s worldview, which he has expressed over the years. The Brazilian government, therefore, intends to adopt a more prudent and calm approach, waiting for events to unfold before discussing any possible changes in course or rhetoric.The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha, stated that every step will be analyzed and that Brazil will prioritize working on areas of convergence between the two countries.

"He [Trump] can say whatever he wants, he is the elected president of the U.S. We will analyze each step of his government, but as we are a people with faith in life, we will seek to support and work not on divergences, but on convergences," she said when questioned during the announcement of Brazil’s presidency of COP30 at the Planalto Palace in Brasília.
