The Federal Government announced this Tuesday (28) that it will set up a reception center at Confins Airport, in Minas Gerais, for deported Brazilians arriving from the United States, but it did not provide details on how the facility will operate. The decision was announced after a meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and government ministers, which lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
"Our main goal is to ensure that families are not separated and that passengers have proper access to water, food, and temperature control, the latter apparently being one of the most harmful aspects of this flight process. In Brazil, just as we welcome migrants and refugees, we are making an effort to accommodate repatriated Brazilians," said the Minister of Human Rights, Macaé Evaristo.
According to Macaé, one of the government's concerns is that deported individuals arrive in Brazil in need of inclusion in the job market. Because of this, companies have shown interest in discussing with the government ways to create inclusion mechanisms for these people.
According to government officials, the idea for the reception center came from Minister Macaé, who proposed that it include representatives from the Ministries of Health, Education, and Human Rights.
