NEW YORK (AP) Target will no longer open its stores on Thanksgiving Day, making permanent a shift to the unofficial start of the holiday season that was suspended during the coronavirus pandemic.
To limit crowds in stores, retailers last year were forced to turn what had become a weekend shopping blitz into an extended event, with holiday sales beginning as early as October.
That forced shift appears to have been fortuitous.
U.S. holiday sales last November and December rose 8.2% in 2020 from the previous year, according to The National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group. The trade group predicts 2021 could shatter that record, growing between 8.5% and 10.5%.

(10,732 posts)I have always thought it a ridiculous example of corporate greed. Not just Target, either. Opening stores earlier and earlier on Friday, then opening at midnight, then 6pm on Thanksgiving. Earlier and earlier. Ruining the employees' holidays.

(50 posts)These employers need to realize that their employees value time off and time spent with their family. Its a stressful time of year for retail. The time off will be nice for them to regain their sanity, if only for a minute. Its a start.

I watched my super churchy, religulous, NW Iowanian in-laws rush out after TG a few years ago to hit the big box stores for flat screens and nikes. It felt dirty, somehow.
Of course, target.com will be there for those who can't resist shopping during football.
