Many workers face uncertain recovery

Officials with the International Labour Organization warned on Monday that the recovery from the pandemic will be slow and uncertain. They downgraded their forecast due, in part, to the impacts of recent coronavirus variants.

The officials looked at the number of hours worked globally in 2019, the year before the pandemic hit. They project the total this year will be almost 2 percent lower, equivalent to losing more than 50 million full-time jobs.

The officials project global unemployment of more than 200 million.

Workers in the US and much of Europe have seen employment rebound. But the recovery has depended on how successful authorities have been in containing the virus.
Developing nations have not had the same access to vaccines. ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said many workers are being required to shift to new types of work.
