At the unveiling of this old scar, Mr. Welch dropped his many Dickensian disguises and sat mute and naked with rage. In no longer than two minutes, Mr. Welch had opposed McCarthy’s heavy artillery with a short outburst of human decency. It divested the McCarthy crisis of its political cunning and brought millions of confused people to their elementary senses. Tonight the New York Post wrote Joe Welch’s best epitaph: ‘Rarely has any man served his country so well with a single act.’
