The state of the job market will be on display this week with key economic data pertaining to labor slated for release.
Consumer confidence is also on the agenda, giving investors insight into spending habits amid record high inflation.
Investors will look to gain deeper insight into how the labor market is performing as COVID-19 cases are again rising, with a bevy of economic data connected to jobs slated for release. First out of the gate is the July Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, otherwise known as the JOLTs report. This tracks how many job openings there are in a given month. In June, available jobs declined to 10.7 million,1 but the overall number is still higher than before the pandemic. More tightening could be a bad sign for the economy.
Investors will get a snapshot look at the private sector when ADP releases its national unemployment report for August. This economic data point was retooled in recent months in a bid to better reflect the state of the job market.
Also this week, the unemployment rate for July is issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Rounding out the job related news, unemployment claims for the previous week are due. On the consumer front, be on the lookout for the Conference Board to release its consumer confidence survey for August. This leading indicator gives investors an idea of how consumers are feeling about the economy and their finances.
