Quote for the Day:
Why this response? In part because Americans have little respect or affection for politics and those who practice it. In part because political action is regarded as the realm of passion, opinion and prejudice the very antitheses of the techno-bureaucratic culture, with its faith in objectivity and expertise. In part, too, because politics is perhaps the last preserve of public passions, now that religion is of small moment to anyone, including the new breed of seminarians.
But all these factors do not add up to an explanation either of the growing politicization of the campuses or of the increasingly heavy counter-assaults against that politicization. For a fuller explanation it is necessary to look once again at the close integration of campus and community.

(11,463 posts)1. Monday is the big day - will the S&P 500 set a new low for this bear market?
The previous closing low for this bear market was 3667 on June 16. (A way to remember: 3666 plus 1)
It closed Friday at 3693, just 26 points (0.7%) away from that. And 23.0% below the Jan 3 all-time high.
Worse than that when one considers the seriously eroding purchasing power of those dollars.

(46,998 posts)2. My view is very pessimistic
I don't think Dow 17,500 is inconceivable.
