In 1905 one Herbert Marcus and his brother-in-law Al Neiman, a graduate of a Midwestern orphan asylum, left Dallas to venture on a small advertising agency in Atlanta, Georgia. In two years they sold it for $25,000. Mr. and Mrs. Neiman took most of the proceeds to New York City, stayed in a boardinghouse and spent $17,000 on a flock of New York dresses and reams of silk and satin. They returned to Dallas, rented a shambling two-storey building, hired a fitter (at their own salary) and a stockgirl, and announced the premature birth of Neiman-Marcus as ‘the South’s finest and only exclusive women’s ready-to-wear shop.’
