Quote for the Day:

Campaigning, August 1968. A banner read Register Commies, Not Guns. It suddenly seemed that we were surrounded by antilife, conserving, neighbor-fearing people – or rather by good people whose neighbor-fearing instincts were being played upon – and that the enemy was going to win. And win not just this election, but the power to impose themselves, here and in many other countries where waves of reaction were beginning, for a long time to come. The hymn went on and on, and the Nixon cheers went on and on. It wasn't the victory of one man or the death of another. It was the death of the future, and of our youth, because we might be rather old before the conservers left and the compassionate men came back.

Gloria Steinem. Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions. Henry Holt and Company/Owl Books. (c) 1983, 1995.

The Quote for the Day is always chosen as I'm putting together the rest of the post.

They're not selected ahead of time, and I rarely have anything specific in mind when I go looking for one.

All of them come from books I own and have read.

I am as much a book hoarder as I am a reader. And much as I dislike the Amazon behemoth, Kindle has made a lot of old books available, affordable, and easy to carry in one's electronic pocket, so to speak.

tsundoku -
It means buying books and letting them pile up unread. The word dates back to the very beginning of modern Japan, the Meiji era (1868-1912) and has its origins in a pun. Tsundoku, which literally means reading pile
