Since leaders lead one at a time but followers come in bunches that make leaders, it has been possible to do a great deal of scientific research on authoritarian followers. We know how they are created, where they are concentrated, how they think, why they are so easily led, why they are so aggressive, and even a lot that they do not know about themselves. Social scientists have been fascinated for decades by the authoritarian followers who, as Erich Fromm put it and as Dostoyevsky portrayed in “The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor” in The Brothers Karamazov, want to escape from freedom. After all, the followers make someone into a dictator.
