No one doubts that we live in the wake of twentieth-century excess. What we can see now is the apocalyptic nature of that excess and how closely it was related to various malignant claims to the ownership of death. Looking at World War I and the Armenian genocide, World War II and the Holocaust, Soviet and Chinese Communism, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Vietnam war, genocides in Cambodia and Rwanda, and near-genocidal acts and wars in the former Yugoslavia, we can say that the last century was an arena of contending visions of purification, one seemingly more murderous than the next. I have studied a number of these events, in each of which the killing was part of a terrible illusion of rejuvenation.
