And out of thousands of ingenues with an urge to strip, only a few girls became famous throughout the land. But famous they did become. For almost two decades their names would be as familiar to the American public as movie stars. Gypsy Rose Lee, Margie Hart, Georgia Sothern, Lois DeFee–even today, for nostalgic men over thirty, these are names to conjure with. They–and others–became the great girls of burlesque.
