To the hungry of the world, though, this was the bottom line: Filling a twenty-five-gallon fuel tank of a sport utility vehicle with a blend containing 85 percent ethanol – the highest mixture available at pumps in the United States – would consume about eight bushels of corn, which contained enough calories to feed a person for a year.

Jean Ziegler, the then-UN special rapporteur on the right to food, did the math as forecasts indicated the United States would soon be pumping billions of bushels of corn into cars. What it added up to, he charged, was "a crime against humanity."
