How could some creatures make it through the mass extinctions, climatic anomalies, swooping temperature variations, wobbling of the earth on its axis, extraterrestrial bombardments, and other perturbations that wiped out nearly everything else? If there is no adaptation to compensate for environmental change, then a species will be unable to function effectively in a modified environment, and in time will die out. In contrast, animals whose environments remained stable, or who could engineer minor changes that enabled them to survive for hundreds of millions of years—think of the horseshoe crabs, crocodiles, lungfishes, coelacanths, and chambered nautiluses—have been awarded the honorary appellation of living fossils.
