In my afterword to a book of stories called You Like It Darker, I wrote that I don’t understand why people need stories, or why I—among many others—feel the need to write them. Do I care? I do not. There’s an old saying that goes if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The story machine in my head isn’t broken, at least not yet, so it needs maintenance but not repair, and probably doesn’t bear too much thinking about.
