"Jane" was an underground women's collective that grew out of Chicago' women's liberation movement. It began as a counseling and referral service, such as existed in numerous cities, connecting women with illegal abortionists and helping to preserve the safety of both. But Jane women became unique in learning to perform their own abortions, ultimately providing abortions for 11,000 women from 1969 to 1973. Although seven Jane women were arrested in 1972, they were back in practice six weeks later. Jane not only had an exemplary safety record but lowered abortion prices 400 percent, from approximately $400 to $100. When abortion was legalized, these lower prices became the norm.
