[Washington, D.C.], February 26, 2021 - Today President of International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Tim Driscoll issued the following statement to support the nomination of Mayor Marty Walsh for U.S. Secretary of Labor:

"On behalf of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) and our 75,000 members in the United States, I am writing to express our strong support for the nomination of Mayor Marty Walsh for U.S. Secretary of Labor. Throughout his career as a union leader and public servant, Mayor Walsh has been a tireless advocate for working families. As Secretary of Labor, he will support policies that protect and expand workers’ rights and the American economy.

Mayor Walsh’s qualifications to lead the Department of Labor are numerous, but perhaps none more critical than his deep and personal understanding of the challenges facing our nation’s workers. This keen understanding is grounded in his own lived experience as a construction laborer with LIUNA Local 223 before advancing to lead the Boston Building and Construction Trades Council. His commitment to serving the interests of workers continued throughout his 16 years of service in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he was recognized as one of the principle architects of worker-centered legislation. Walsh’s administrative and leadership skills as the Mayor of Boston for the past seven years make clear his ability to lead and direct the critical operations of the Department of Labor. Through it all, he never forgot where he came from, and he has always fought for the rights of working people and dignity in the workplace.

BAC is proud to support Brother Walsh for Labor Secretary because he understands the issues that working people face every day. He has worked side by side with working men and women, immigrants and people of color to increase work opportunities, combat inequality, protect workers’ safety and health and build stronger communities. He has always been a fighter who knows collective bargaining is essential to a better life for workers, and we are in this fight with him.

America’s workers deserve a Labor Secretary who can and will protect, empower, and expand the rights of working families. Brother Walsh has always been and will continue to be a leading champion for all working people. We are proud to support Mayor Walsh as the next Secretary of Labor."
