10-Year-Olds Among Hundreds of Children Found Working at McDonald's Restaurants: KY, IN, OH, MD

- '10-year-olds among hundreds of children found working at McDonald’s restaurants,' NBC News, May 3, 2023. Ed. - Two 10-yr-olds were discovered working unpaid & until as late as 2 a.m. at one McDonald’s restaurant in Louisville, KY, operated by Bauer Food LLC, the Labor Dept. said. -

More than 300 children, including two 10-year-olds, were found working at McDonald's restaurants across Kentucky and several other states in violation of federal labor laws, the Labor Department said Tuesday. In one case, investigators found 2 10-year-olds were working unpaid and until as late as 2 a.m. at one McDonald's restaurant in Louisville operated by Bauer Food LLC, which is based in Louisville, the department said in a news release. The 2 children prepared and distributed food orders, cleaned the store, worked at the drive-thru window and operated a register, investigators found.

One of them was also allowed to operate a deep fryer, a task prohibited for workers under the age of 16 under federal law.

Most of the restaurants, 45 of the 62, were in Kentucky, according to data released by the department. The 2 10-year-olds were among at least 305 children found to have been employed in violation of federal labor laws across 62 McDonald’s locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio, operated under 3 franchisees — Bauer Food LLC, Archways Richwood LLC and Bell Restaurant Group I LLC, the Labor Department said. Bauer Food LLC said the 2 10-year-olds alleged to have been employed at the McDonald’s restaurant were children of a night manager who were visiting their parent at work and were not approved by franchisee organization management to be in that part of the restaurant.

The franchisee said it had since taken steps to ensure policies regarding children visiting a parent or guardian at work were clear to all employees. "These reports are unacceptable, deeply troubling and run afoul of the high expectations we have for the entire McDonald’s brand," Tiffanie Boyd, senior vice president & chief people officer at McDonald’s USA, said in a statement. "It is not lost on us the significant responsibility we carry to ensure a positive & safe experience for everyone under the Arches." "I know how important it is that every restaurant fosters a culture of safety. As a mother whose teenage son proudly worked at our local McDonald’s, I feel this on a very personal level." "We are committed to ensuring our franchisees have the resources they need to foster safe workplaces for all employees & maintain compliance with all labor laws."

Archways Richwood LLC did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NBC News early Wednesday. Too often, employers fail to follow the child labor laws that protect young workers,” Karen Garnett-Civils, the Wage and Hour Division district director in Louisville, said in a statement. “Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens & deep fryers.”. Archways Richwood LLC, based in Walton, was found to have allowed 242 children between the ages of 14 & 15 to work beyond allowable hours. Most worked earlier or later in the day than the law permits & more than 3 hours on school days, the Labor Dept. said. The employer was expected to be fined an estimated $143,566 in civil money penalties for the violations...https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/10-year-olds-hundreds-children-found-working-mcdonalds-rcna82583

"CHILD LABOR HISTORY IN THE US." (1 min). Beyond history, *"child labor violations have been on the rise since 2015." * McDonald's, Subway, Popeye's & Burger King are some of the restaurant violators. Child labor violations have also been reported in meat packing sanitation companies and auto manufacturing plants such as Hyundai/Kia in the US.

And you know their DEFENSE is going to be "the hours we require our night manager to work are not compatible with anyone else being available to stay home with his/her children, so the children were 'visiting' him/her at work."

My dear friend came down with Hodgkin’s disease when she was 15, and she had been working excessive hours (illegal hours) in a Chinese restaurant for a year or two where she was cleaning deep fryers.

Every body is different, but kids are more vulnerable to chemicals than adults, and kid cancers grow faster.

I had the feeling when I was a teenager that this disease was connected to her long hours working in the kitchen of that restaurant.

She had to have chemo and radiation, and although she survived, she died of breast cancer by age 30.

She was a very smart person with a kind heart and an old soul.

And make these employers pay for their medical insurance and costs, as well.

Laws are supposed to fetter Greed, not enable Unfettered Greed

Capitalism can flourish and reward the innovators, but it requires guard rail Laws to maintain a wholesome population.

We had post WWII federal tax laws that created the Middle Class majority and build a national infrastructure. Reagan kill d that progressive tax structure. And infrastructure was neglected and jobs flew overseas.

Sadly, then and now some states continued to impoverish too many and misuse funds to improve schools, healthcare & infrastructure. Greed & Power combine to create misery.

This is an issue that I once considered settled. Eternal vigilance is necessary.

And at a "mainstream" venue, not some hidden sweatshop.
