American Airlines Flight Attendant Union to Announce Strike Vote Results at Pickets Across U.S.
Americans 26,000+ Flight Attendants demand a new contract with improvements theyve waited on for years; they head into Labor Day with pickets to demonstrate frustration with management.
EULESS, Texas (August 23rd, 2023) On August 30th the Wednesday before Labor Day American Airlines Flight Attendants, represented by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), will hold a series of informational pickets at twelve Flight Attendant bases across the U.S. Announced at these pickets will be the results of the strike authorization vote, a crucial step toward striking. Contract negotiations with American Airlines have not produced a contract that includes the improvements to pay, onboard staffing, and quality of life that Flight Attendants need to see.
The Flight Attendant contract at American Airlines became amendable over four years ago. APFA has passed proposals on every section of its collective bargaining agreement. Further, the union has invoked the services of the National Mediation Board by filing for federal mediation, a necessary step to reach an agreement as outlined by Section 6 of the Railway Labor Act.
After the APFA Board of Directors authorized a strike authorization vote of the membership, the 26,000+ American Airlines Flight Attendants began voting for strike authorization on July 28th. The strike authorization would allow APFA to call a strike.
If the parties cannot reach agreement in federal mediation, the union could request to be released into a thirty-day cooling-off period, after which 26,000+ American Airlines Flight Attendants would be free to strike the worlds largest carrier.
Labor Day should take on a whole new meaning for American Airlines management this year, said Julie Hedrick, National President of APFA. Its long past time for significant increases in compensation and improvements to our working conditions. We are ready to bring these negotiations to a close, or we may be ready to strike.
