Electricians agree to new contract, as insulators go on strike

A 10-week strike by Seattle-area electrical workers has been settled, but labor strife continues with another trade unanimously authorizing a strike.

Electricians who install and maintain fire alarms and other life-safety systems negotiated a contract that includes a 19% raise, or $12.50 an hour in combined wages and benefits, over three years.

That's more than the $10 an hour that employers offered, but less than the $17.75 rate presented by the limited energy electricians, who are represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46. Wages will increase from $65.02 an hour, said Jameson Schwetz, the executive director of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).

Another strike was called June 14, when Local 7 of the Heat and Frost Insulators rejected a contract proposal from the employers by 99% in what the union representative wrote in a letter to members called an "unprecedented show of solidarity."
