Three Mothers Occupy an empty house in Oakland for 2 months are evicted with armored vehicles

(Those arrested from inside the house were mothers Jesse Turner, 25; Tolani King, 46; and Misty Cross, 38, all of Oakland. They had previously asked for help from Mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf, who they said sat there with a poker face. Later after the raid, when she was on TV, she said how much she cared about them and what a travesty it was to be evicted in a military style. The Mothers said she had to have know about the plans by police to use this military force.)

Before dawn on Tuesday, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office descended on a residential block in West Oakland with armored vehicles, guns drawn. The thirty-some officers—including a contingent in military-style fatigues and helmets—showed up not to respond to a riot or the apocalypse, but rather to enforce the eviction of a handful of mothers and their children, a group who has turned their occupation of a house into a (peaceful) protest movement under the banner Moms 4 Housing.

Interview with Misty Cross, one of the moms who was arrested, and her daughter Destiny Johnson. Also with Carroll Fife, the director of the Oakland office for Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.

OAKLAND, Calif. - After an acrimonious public battle over a small home in West Oakland that was illegally occupied by four homeless mothers, the group known as Moms 4 Housing on Monday announced an agreement with Wedgewood to buy the Magnolia Street property.

Sam Singer, a spokesman for Wedgewood, confirmed that the sale is taking place. The price of the home has not yet been negotiated. But Singer said the home was purchased by Wedgewood for $501,078 on July 31, 2019. The sale price won't exceed the appraised price, the parties said, and the agreement is with the Oakland Community Land Trust, a nonprofit partially funded by the city.

And by all accounts, the deal isn't done, rather the negotiations have been verbal and in good faith.
