The Devil and Doug LaMalfa
Government
by Jaime O'Neill | April 5, 2014 - 9:47am

There's an evil assault on honest work being waged by our government, an insidious plan by forces intent on robbing people of incentive, stealing their desire to work hard and improve themselves.

I'm speaking, of course, about the character-depleting farm subsidies that have been paid to people like Congressman Doug LaMalfa. LaMalfa, heir to a big northern California rice farm, has been the happy recipient of more than 5 million taxpayer dollars in recent years, money he hasn't lifted a finger to earn. When you give people money for doing nothing, it ruins 'em for honest work. As if to prove the point, Mr. LaMalfa used the clout that comes with big infusions of ill-gotten gains to get himself a "job" in the U.S. Congress, a place where many people go when they've decided that work just isn't how they prefer to spend their fleeting time here on earth.

~snip~

LaMalfa's earning a reputation as a hypocrite statewide, however, a reputation that began to grow beyond his district boundaries thanks to a series of stories by LA Times writer, Michael Hiltzik.

As Hiltzik's reporting revealed, LaMalfa voted for a bill that simultaneously increased the amount guys like him get in lucrative farm subsidies at the same time it reduced food stamps that would have fed the children of the poor, perhaps even with some of the lavishly subsidized rice grown on the congressman's inherited acreage.
