His failure to do his job is going to get us both fired. Hes a nice guy and I really dont want to throw him under the bus, but I sure as hell am not going to lay down in front of it with him.

I don't get it. Either he's planning on coasting to retirement or he's got another job lined up. I got half a loaf: the situation that I was fretting about is now under my control. The increase in workload is minute and the (figurative) ship is no longer taking on water.
So far, so good.
