I drive less then 500 miles per year.

I live in a very rural area.

It is a 22 mile round trip to the closest grocery store.

Many of us out here live in poverty.

I'm not sure if you even had to buy another car. What happened was you had to apply to a gov websire with the car particulars and they would give you a junk it price - which was much better than it was worth.

Once you were approved, you had to take it to a participating mechanic who would basically destroy the engine so it could never run again and sent it to the junk yard.

You got a check directly.

I have 2 cars (one my daughter uses to go to work in everyday), a 1995 and a 2008. So I hear you on old beaters.

But alas, nobody is going to give anyone a new car. But programs like this can get you a leg up on a newer one while still helping the environment.

Paid for. Parts are dirt cheap, and they are easier to maintain. I've updated the 1972 to modern fuel injection with an overdrive transmission. Pollutes way less and gets double the gas mileage when it was new.

It doesn't make financial sense to me to purchase a new vehicle, and the software to diagnose them when there's a fault has become proprietary.

They are not going to have cars to sell. Also repair parts are going to be in short supply. This is a line of dominoes falling,

That along with high scrap prices a few years ago put a dent in the used parts market. We fix and drive a lot of old cars in my neck of the woods.

And, yes, we are planning on replacing the 2007 Toyota Highlander with, probably Subaru Forester. The Highlander is OK, but we've got used to, on my 2014 KIA to rear camera and Bluetube..

And panic over Corona is growing. Many parts are now coming from Mexico.

Btw, I have a 2015 forester (my second). Highly recommend. Unfortunately they dropped the turbo.
