Seems counterproductive to use a monetary source that puts far more CO2 in the atmosphere than a reasonable alternative so we can save a portion of the amazon to capture CO2.

This is giving some value, at least theoretically, to the purchaser. The concept of gaining some type of quasi-property right makes this unique.
