How to correct credit report information

This one's been going on about 30 years. One credit bureau reports an incorrect middle initial. I had conversation and a couple letters with them way back when, but it never got corrected so I left it alone. I think they told me at the time I would have to go to the bank that reported the original error to them but that was lost amongst all the bank takeovers in the 1990s. They all got subsumed into BoA - FNBTx, NCNB, Boatmen's, and there may have been more.

I get junk mail with the incorrect initial too, and it's been stolen that way by hackers, but it never made it to other credit bureaus.

I'm wondering at what point this lingering error might foul something up. Like trying to borrow money.

your verification of social security numbers, addresses, previous loans, credit, etc. would be sufficient to clarify this situation.

I did have a situation a few years ago with someone with my same first and last name listed on my report for a bank I never had a relationship with. I was able to get that removed. I think at the least you should be able to have some notation added to your report.

Best of luck.

And if they try and hide behind some kind of bs process send the CEO of that company a letter spelling out how absurd it is for them not to fix an ancient mistake. And be clear your next step will be a complaint with which ever federal agency regulates them.

But it worked for me with a cell phone provider who would not cooperate. I went on Twitter (this was a long time ago) and complained about the problem on their page. In minutes, I had a message from the "president's office," who took care of it immediately. No company likes bad Tweets. Now I avoid X like the plague, but some other public platform might get their attention.
