Nancy Atwell.

She won a million-dollar international teaching prize. I have some of her work on the shelf next to the desk in my classroom. I don't use it much, because the format doesn't fit current instructional mandates. When I DID, though, in years past, I found it worthy. Some of what she talks about still happens in my classroom, but it happens under the table, so to speak. Here she is, advising young people not to go into teaching at this time. This saddens me, but I cannot say that I disagree.

...though, because I always used to encourage new, potential teachers (including one of my daughters). The culture and environment they would face is very toxic now.

became a teacher in 2014. I warned him repeatedly about what he is facing. Of course, I also fully supported his choice, and continue to do so.

...proud. And he is lucky to have someone who 'gets it' in his corner.
My daughter started in 2006. She had a horrible first year. It was sad because she was very good and LOVED teaching science. She decided life's too short Now she is a highly compensated banker.
I'm proud of her always...
