>>CHICAGO — A former head of Chicago Public Schools plans to plead guilty to planning a scheme to take hundreds of thousands of dollars, airfare, meals and baseball tickets in exchange for steering more than $23 million in contracts to her former employer, her lawyer and a federal prosecutor said on Thursday.

The former head, Barbara Byrd-Bennett, 66, was charged Thursday in a 23-count indictment. An appointee of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, she served as chief executive of Chicago’s beleaguered public school system from October 2012 until her resignation in June.

Noting the “long and sad history of public corruption in this state,” Zachary T. Fardon, the United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, said at a news conference that Ms. Byrd-Bennett was cooperating with the investigation and intended to plead guilty.


Her lawyer, Michael Scudder, released a statement that she was “accepting full responsibility for her conduct” and that her cooperation would include “testifying truthfully if called upon to do so.>>>>>>
