Teacher reinstated after parents complained about Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ posters

A Texas school district backtracked after placing English teacher Taylor Lifka on leave over the posters in her virtual classroom.

A Texas school district has reversed its decision to place a teacher on leave over Black Lives Matter, feminist and pro-LGBTQ posters displayed on the walls of her virtual classroom.

Taylor Lifka, an English teacher at the Roma High School in Roma, a border town of about 10,000 people, was placed on administrative leave Sunday after parents complained about the posters.

Speaking to NBC News, Lifka, 25, said the experience of having national attention turned toward her small classroom has been “overwhelming.”

“Our nation is in a really divisive state right now, and so when something like this comes out that a teacher is being placed on administrative leave because of parents' concerns over teaching tolerance in the classroom, that’s a bigger question,” she said.

In a statement shared with reporters, Roma Independent School District Superintendent Carlos Guzman said the district "regrets that this matter has become a point of controversy."

"It was never the intention of the district to indicate anything less than full support for the concepts of equality and student safety," Guzman said.

The Roma High School teacher who was placed on paid administrative leave over inclusive imagery in her virtual classroom remains unsatisfied with the situation despite being reinstated to her position, demanding more action by the district before she returns to teaching.

The teacher, Taylor Lifka, was put on leave Sunday over Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ imagery. Roma ISD announced her reinstatement Wednesday and that she will be allowed to keep the images up.

For Lifka, however, this isn’t enough and doesn’t plan on returning to work until the district addresses additional concerns.

She didn’t teach Thursday and is not planning on teaching until the district outlines its policies for teachers supporting anti-racism concretely.

This old teacher supports you and absolutely hates this virtual / elearning environment we are in today. Tech is not my friend and I'm working 2-3 times harder in this environment than in a normal classroom.
