Work and play come together in Lowell's Pre-Primary School!

Students in the Discovery class did some amazing sensory work and observations with shaving cream last week. After donning smocks and setting up at individual trays, learners used their senses of hearing, scent, vision and, most of all, touch to explore the substance. When they were ready, students asked for drops of food coloring to mix in. It was so fun to see how the colors changed and interacted as children manipulated the shaving cream. Lastly they added water and noticed the shaving cream went from looking “like yogurt” to “like a milkshake!”

Tactile sensory work like this helps form and maintain neural connections in the brain for our youngest students. These experiences are invaluable for motor skills as well as social and emotional development—not to mention their ability to spark pure joy!!
