Mayor Rahm to Prosser High: Beat it!

by Ben Joravsky

You've sort of got to give Mayor Emanuel credit for constantly looking for new and exciting ways to gut public education in Chicago.

It may be his greatest legacy.

Let's see—he closed 50 schools. He's fired hundreds of staffers. And he's ordered round after round of budget cuts that have left schools so broke they can't afford toilet paper or librarians.

Now he's settling on a new strategy—charter schools!

Actually, the strategy of killing unionized public schools by diverting their students to nonunionized charters is not new—it's a national mania.

i will say 2 important things-
mayor daley always refused to set school boundaries in accordance with gang territories. i concur. somewhere you have to draw the line about whose city it is. all chicago highschools have cops and after school protection. just do our best and move along. running scared is no way to run a city.

noble street is a charter for kids having trouble in school. they have done a great job with a lot of kid sin vulnerable situations. they belong in the system. they are the opposite of what is wrong with cps.

and just one ps- if prosser is struggling in the new funding system, it is likely that their building is also underutilized. i think that was the purpose of paying by the butt. make principals make decisions about keeping their building utilized, rather than downtown.
the number of kids that were being serviced in huge old buildings was shocking. one huge 4 story building had less than 200 kids, and 3 nearby schools with empty seats.
