Libyan PM says 2,000 people feared dead in flooding in eastern Libya following stormPublished: 11 September, 2023: 03:23 PM GST
Updated: 12 September, 2023: 12:55 AM GST
Mediterranean storm Daniel caused devastating floods in Libya that swept away entire neighborhoods and wrecked homes in multiple coastal towns in the east of the North African nation. As many as 2,000 people were feared dead, one of the countrys leaders said Monday.
The destruction appeared greatest in Derna, a city formerly held by extremists in the chaos that has gripped Libya for more than a decade and left it with crumbling and inadequate infrastructure. Libya remains divided between two rival administrations, one in the east and one in the west, each backed by militias and foreign governments.
The confirmed death toll from the weekend flooding stood at 61 as of late Monday, according to health authorities. But the tally did not include Derna, which had become inaccessible, and many of the thousands missing there were believed carried away by waters.
Video by residents of the city posted online showed major devastation. Entire residential areas were erased along a river that runs down from the mountains through the city center. Multi-story apartment buildings that once stood well back from the river were partially collapsed into the mud.

Hansen et al. (1981): Climate impact of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide
Climate models indicate that large regional climate variations will accompany global warming. Such shifting of climatic patterns has great practical significance, because the precipitation patterns determine the locations of deserts, fertile areas, and marginal lands. A major regional change in the doubled CO₂ experiment with our three-dimensional model (6,8) was the creation of hot, dry conditions in much of the western two-thirds of the United States and Canada and in large parts of central Asia. The hot, dry summer of 1980 may be typical of the United States in the next century if the model results are correct. However, the model shows that many other places, especially coastal areas, are wetter with doubled CO₂.

The death toll from devastating flooding in Libyas eastern coastal city of Derna has risen to at least 11,300, according to a UN report released Saturday, as search efforts continue.
A further 170 people have been killed outside of Derna due to the flooding, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
And in Derna alone, at least 10,100 people remain missing.
These figures are expected to rise as search-and-rescue crews work tirelessly to find survivors, it added.
