Yet Another Massive Storm Brings Massive Flooding To Broward, Dade, Lauderdale - 1-3"/Hour Expected

A significant storm is hitting South Florida, dumping heavy rain in some spots that could eclipse 10 inches. Flood watches stretch from the Space Coast of Florida to near Key Biscayne, and the National Weather Service has also included Southeast Florida in a Level 3 out of 4 risk of flash flooding and excessive rainfall. The Weather Service has determined there’s a greater than 70 percent chance Miami and Fort Lauderdale will see at least another 4 inches of rain through Thursday morning, on top of the 3 to 9 inches that fell Tuesday into Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday evening, weather radar showed moderate-to-heavy rain falling over much of South Florida, and forecast models project it could persist into the pre-dawn hours Thursday in eastern areas. In a special bulletin, the Weather Service called for the likelihood of “localized but highly impactful flash flooding” in a zone from West Palm Beach to the Upper Keys.

“A widespread 3 to 5 inches of rain are expected throughout this region, however where the most persistent thunderstorms repeat, there is potential for up to 10 inches of rain,” the bulletin said. “Should the most persistent rains fall over an urban center, which is an increasing possibility … then locally highly impactful and significant flash flooding can be expected.”

The Weather Service cautioned that rain could fall at rates of up to 1 to 3 inches per hour. It was particularly concerned about heavy rain in coastal areas. “If any heavy rain falls around periods of high tide in some of the coastal communities, the water will have trouble receding,” the Weather Service said.
