Research paves the way for better lithium metal batteries

By Leah Burrows | Press contact
January 8, 2024

Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new lithium metal battery that can be charged and discharged at least 6,000 times — more than any other pouch battery cell — and can be recharged in a matter of minutes.

The research not only describes a new way to make solid state batteries with a lithium metal anode but also offers new understanding into the materials used for these potentially revolutionary batteries.

The research is published in Nature Materials.

“Lithium metal anode batteries are considered the holy grail of batteries because they have ten times the capacity of commercial graphite anodes and could drastically increase the driving distance of electric vehicles,” said Xin Li, Associate Professor of Materials Science at SEAS and senior author of the paper. “Our research is an important step toward more practical solid state batteries for industrial and commercial applications.”

"we are almost there!" and then we never hear of them again. I sure hope this one is the one to full fill its promises.

… The technology has been licensed through Harvard Office of Technology Development to Adden Energy, a Harvard spinoff company cofounded by Li and three Harvard alumni. The company has scaled up the technology to build a smart phone-sized pouch cell battery.

Supposedly, a big advantage is that without the liquid, penetrating the battery does not make it burst into flame like current batteries. I think this is what Toyota is planning for their upcoming EVs.

in 2022 there were 918k EV's sold in the US

In 2023, there were 1.2 million EV's sold in the US.

Of course, this doesn't take into account the hybrids being sold (Toyota sold over 650k in 2023)

Now that it's a confirmed market, there is substantial capital being invested in battery research.

The days of an EV with less than 200 miles range are in the past.
