Wastewater from Tyson meat processing plants is polluting U.S. waterways, report says - PBS NewsHour



Tyson Foods is one of the world’s biggest meat and poultry producers. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, it’s also a major polluter in the United States.

A new report from the group says Tyson plants dumped more than 371 million pounds of pollutants into U.S. waterways between 2018 and 2022. John Yang speaks with UCS research director Stacy Woods about the report’s findings. - Aired on 05/26/2024.

... it's bad for the workers, and it's especially bad for the animals who get turned into meat.

Chicken is not a large component of my own diet and my vegetarian-approaching-vegan wife doesn't eat chicken at all.

But I can't say the same for our dogs. I don't expect them to be vegetarians and I'm certain they've consumed countless "retired" laying hens in their lives, mostly in the form of dog kibble.

Labor, environmental, and animal welfare regulations are not a bad thing. I'm not any kind of radical vegan, I'd simply prefer it if any meat I buy wasn't from industries that are abusing their workers, trashing the environment, and raising their animals in inhumane conditions.

I accept the reality that humans are omnivores. I don't think we have to be so bloody minded about it.
