The oldest cars on the New York City subway—the R32, known as Brightliners—were introduced in 1964, the year the Beatles embarked on their legendary U.S. tour.
Today, 222 of the stainless-steel workhorses continue to provide service, making up 50% of the J/Z-lines fleet, 44% of the C fleet, and less than 5% of the A fleet.
The cars, which were made by Budd Co. based in Philadelphia, are showing their age, often breaking down. In 2012, the MTA announced that it would slowly phase them out, but delivery of the replacement cars fell behind schedule.
