Critically endangered marine mammal, the vaquita, NEEDS YOUR HELP NOW!!!
Current aerial surveys estimate the population of the vaquita at less than 30 and attempts at captive breeding lead to the death of all 3 of these shy, beautiful porpoises.
The only group that appears to be doing anything constructive (I contribute, but I'm not a member or employee) is the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Some people consider them controversial (I do not), but they are leading an effort in cooperation with the Mexican government to save the vaquita. They are conducting anti-poaching patrols and removing the nets that are killing the vaquita and other aquatic animals in the Gulf of California (including other critically endangered species).
I'm considering dropping my contributions to all other environmental groups and I'm praying the population will stabilize in the next couple of years.
Please consider supporting the Sea Shepherds. If you can't please check out the video and pass it to someone who may be interested.

(33,643 posts)Not to mention, almost nobody eats porpoise to begin with, so ... why should we care, exactly?

(2,701 posts)Endangered species issues always get to me. A permanent loss is just tragic. In this case we are not talking about a sub-population or a species that has other members in other habitats, the vaquita is a one of a kind.
I've been stressing over this for a couple of weeks now, and I'm hoping for a moment at least, to bump this up to the front page of DU!

(1,483 posts)On the left hand side bar Under Main, just go to General Discussion and from there just cut and paste your post from there and everyone can see it.
I saw it because I always read "Latest Threads" first. I'm not subbed to the Vegan group right now.

I sent an e-mail to John Perry, the sculptor and got a response. I sent one to Rachel Maddow, and I'm considering a snail mail to the pope.
