Sea Shepherd Crew Arrested and 706 Dolphins Killed in Faroe Islands

TORSHAVN, FAROE ISLANDS -- More than 700 dolphins were killed in the Faroe Islands yesterday (Wednesday), more than two-thirds of the approximately 1,000 marine mammals killed across the entirety of last year.

Two Sea Shepherd crew members were arrested in the course of the events for documenting the hunt.

Three dolphin hunts, known locally as the "grind," took place along the islands which lie just 200 miles north of Scotland.

The graphic scenes saw hundreds of dolphins driven towards the shoreline before being killed using lances and long knives.

Research conducted by Dr. Tetsuya Endo from Hokkaido University established baseline concerns as early as 2003, when his team documented bottlenose dolphins containing mercury at 100 parts per million (ppm). This finding already represented 250 times the safe consumption limit of 0.4 ppm established by most health authorities.

But there is no longer a need for whale meat to meet nutritional needs.
In fact, today's pilot whale meat is contaminated with heavy metals which makes it unfit for human consumption
But the people of the Faroe Islands still support the pilot whale & dolphin slaughter (grind) anyway.
