Netanyahu in dispute with Israeli negotiators over ceasefire conditions, source says

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has locked horns with Israeli ceasefire negotiators over his insistence that Israel will not pull out of the so-called Philadelphi Corridor in the south of the Gaza Strip, a person with knowledge of the talks said.

The Philadelphi Corridor, along the border with Egypt, and the Netzarim Corridor cutting across the middle of the Gaza Strip, have been two of the main sticking points in talks backed by Egypt, Qatar and the United States.

Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted that Israel will not give up control of the Philadelphi Corridor because it wants to prevent Hamas smuggling weapons and fighters across the border with Egypt. He has also said Israel must maintain checkpoints in the Netzarim Corridor to stop armed Hamas fighters moving from the southern section of the Gaza Strip into the north.

The person said Netanyahu had agreed to shift one Philadelphi position by a few hundred metres but would retain overall control of the corridor, despite pressure from members of his own negotiating team for more concessions.

the Tkuma and Otzma Yehudit parties will bring down the government, so he continues to poison pill the negotiations. There is no way Arab nations will agree to giving Israel permanent control of the Philadelphi Corridor, let alone splitting Gaza in two.

This one, for instance, which appears to be contempotrraneous with the cited report, claims concessions going way further than shifting one position by a few hundred meters:

Israeli delegation offers new proposal regarding Philadelphi Corridor - report

The Israeli delegation in Cairo offered a new proposal regarding the control of the Philadelphi Corridor in the Gaza Strip, according to the Qatari Al Araby Al Jadeed on Friday.

The proposal reportedly allows for a UN force to be positioned at several junctures in the corridor. In addition, the proposal stipulated, according to the report, that a European delegation and representatives of the Palestinian Authority would be positioned on the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing.

Furthermore, with regards to the Rafah crossing, there will not be a phased withdrawal of IDF troops from the area.
