Russia always considered Moldova to be within its sphere of influence, and a big part of Russia's invasion of Ukraine was to link Russia and Moldova by land captured from Ukraine.
Once Moldova gains EU membership, the tiny sliver of land with ethnic majority Russian population which calls itself Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic and claims independence from Moldova, will become irrelevant in the long term.
This is a huge, and unexpected, blow to Putin's coveted ambition to resurrect the Grand Russian Empire.
