As Russia wages their war against Ukraine, something terrible is coming just over the horizon - "General Winter." "General Winter" has long been considered Russia's strongest soldier. Or, in other words, the cold Russian winters have often been cited as a factor that makes Russia undefeatable on the battlefield. But many people miss an important fact: this has only been true in contexts where Russia was the defender.
As the invading army in their war against Ukraine, it now turns out that Russia's greatest strength is becoming its greatest weakness. Ukraine has figured this out, and is now actively working to make this worse for Russia this winter, with pressure on Russian energy networks and supply chains that Russia simply can NOT handle.

(11,405 posts)Europe should figure out a way to build Ukraine a 30 story fan and push that poison right back toward Moscow.

(207 posts)The stupidity of damaging a nuclear facility from which you are DOWNWIND makes no sense. Some would call it "self-destructive." Russians should be pissed. And Moscow is to the northeast of Chernobyl. So those nice springtime breezes should really be invigorating.

(207 posts)There's just no limit to the stupidity of humans. This is also proof positive that Putin has no business leading a nation. He knows what happened and probably approved of the bombing. So... he could poison his own soil.

(4,825 posts)somewhere deep in a Ukrainian bunker, there are hundreds of flamingo missiles just waiting for the opportunity to shut down Russia's power grid. No electricity, no gasoline, no heat. It's time for Russia to plunge into darkness and bitter cold.

(114,392 posts)Their system, which people I know who have moved to the former Eastern Bloc countries , is superior to anything they experienced here in the US except heating by heated water circulating under the floors, something a lot of rich people have. Flats are toasty on the coldest days and cooled by crackin windows on warmer days, increasing fresh air indoors. The problem is decades of kludge repairs instead of refits. Strikes on electrical substations mean the pumps won't work, meaning even more stress is put onto a good but crumbling and leaking system.
Transportaton has been getting worse outside Moscow. if a delivery of something is going to Moscow, the trucker knows he can refuel there and get back home. That isn't true in the other oblasts, refueling can mean a wait of a week or two, so things just aren't being delivered as regularly as they should be---like food, fertilizer for farmers, even mail. It's aslo preventing food from getting from farm to processor or market. General Winter is going to bring hunger, if not famine, to a lot of Russia.
Honestly, if the world had wanted to destroy Russia, it couldn't have done a btter job than Putin has.
