Succession in authoritarian systems is rarely straightforward. In Central Asia, leaders who have ruled for decades are beginning to confront the challenge of transferring power without destabilizing their regimes. Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon has spent years preparing his son Rustam Emomali as a successor – but the process has proven slow and a tight-rope walk politically. Internal rivalries, economic pressures, and regional security concerns all complicate the transition.
