Israel slams U.N. body's call for 'blacklist' of settlement companies

JERUSALEM

Israel on Thursday assailed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for adopting a measure that calls for the establishment of a database of businesses "involved in activities" in the occupied West Bank.

Israel's U.N. ambassador, Danny Danon, called the database a "blacklist" and said the UNHRC was behaving "obsessively" against Israel.

The Geneva-based council, a 47-member state forum established 10 years ago which Israel and its major U.S. ally accuse of bias against the Jewish state, adopted the motion with 32 votes in favor, none against and 15, mostly European nations, abstaining.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement calling the body an "anti-Israel circus," adding the council "attacks the only democracy in the Middle East and ignores the gross violations of Iran, Syria and North Korea."

First he puts himself in good company by bringing up Iran, Syria, and North Korea. Gosh, he says, we're not AS BAD AS THEM!

Second, none of those countries are occupying another people's territory, stealing their land, and treating them like shit. So maybe the council feels, on a human rights level, that's very significant.

However, I will buy products from Israeli companies not on that list. In a way, such a list makes it safer to buy Israeli products - I can be sure that any Israeli product not on that list is Apartheid-free.
