Just 2,000 Israelis Turn Up at Rally for Soldier Who Shot Palestinian in Head

Source: The Forward

A Tel Aviv rally for the Israeli soldier charged with manslaughter after shooting dead a disarmed Palestinian stabber drew approximately 2,000 people on Tuesday night, according to police estimates.

The number of demonstrators at the rally in Rabin Square was considerably lower than the tens of thousands anticipated by organizers and police, according to the Times of Israel. The demonstration was to call for the release of Elor Azaria, who was indicted Monday for shooting a Palestinian man, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, who had stabbed an Israeli soldier last month in the tense West Bank city of Hebron, several media outlets reported.

The charge against Azaria, 19, of Ramle, marked the first time in over 10 years that an Israeli soldier has been charged with manslaughter for a killing that took place during field operations, according to Haaretz.

The case has generated considerable controversy, with some Israelis outraged that Azaria violated rules of engagement by shooting someone who was supine and unarmed, while others are outraged that he is being disciplined, particularly because Azaria has said he feared al-Sharif might be about to detonate an explosive.

But news like this makes me believe that most Israelis actually have a moral backbone and that the current political situation can be turned around.

2000 people is a crowd, but not a majority.

Would you want lots of Israelis to be supporting the soldier? I think it is to the credit of the Israeli public that they won't rally for him when there is a serious question as to whether he's guilty of manslaughter.

However, it's a bit sad that the only good news coming from Israel is that the racist rallies only draw a few thousand people.

I suggest you read this :

However as I previously stated ....."" Most Israelis will not attend a rally ....

....which they know in advance is out to bash the Army top brass and the minister of defense . "

They turned support of the soldier into an attack on the IDF and on Moshe Ya'alon......big no no over here .

They made the same mistake during the disengagement from Gaza.....you want public sympathy and support then dont turn against the IDF ....quickest way to loose it .
