Abbas urges UN Security Council to reject Quartet report

Last edited Wed Jul 6, 2016, 04:15 PM - Edit history (1)

The "moderate" leader, Abbas. If Abbas is moderate, Netanyahu is amazingly liberal and progressive in comparison.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday harshly criticized a newly released report by the Quartet of Middle East peacemakers, saying it would not further the cause of peace, and called on the United Nations Security Council to reject the document.

The Quartet — the UN, United States, European Union and Russia — on Friday published its long-awaited report on the peace process, which saw for the first time a major international body cite Palestinian incitement to violence against Israel as a major obstacle to ending the conflict. Incitement was one of the three “negative” trends highlighted in the report penned by UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov. The envoy said all three trends (settlements and the Palestinian Authority’s lack of control over the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip being the other two) “severely undermine hopes for peace.”

But Abbas, visiting the grave of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, reiterated the PA’s rejection of the Quartet report. “We have published our position on the Quartet commission, and we said this report is not fit for the task of peace,” Abbas said, according to the official PA news site Wafa. “We are very sorry that this is the position, and we hope the United Nation Security Council will not adopt this report,” Abbas said.

...Senior PLO official and top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat was quick to express disappointment Friday that the report criticized both sides rather than only Israel. “It does not meet our expectations as a nation living under a foreign colonial military occupation,” he said, and criticized what he called the report’s attempt “to equalize the responsibilities between a people under occupation and a foreign military occupier.”

Abbas expects terror against Jews to be supported by the world. Can't really blame him given that the world has supported his terrorism for decades.

I guess, strictly speaking, but so's Jordan and Lebanon.

Me thinks it's back to the claim "Jews are European colonists foisted on us indigenous folk and who must pack up and leave Palestine."

Wonder what Arabic word he had in mind for "nation."

How Israel Succeeds in Watering Down Criticism From Major Powers

Source: The Forward, July 5, 2016

Ahead of the release last week of a report on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by the Quartet of Middle East mediators, the word from diplomats was that it would be hard-hitting, especially on Israel and its settlement building.

The United States, the European Union and the United Nations were fed up with Israel’s consistent violation of international law, which views all settlements on occupied land as illegal, diplomats said. While Russia, the fourth Quartet member, might be more restrained, Israel was set for a serious ticking off.

Those concerns reached Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Officials briefed that he was determined to talk the Quartet down. He flew to Moscow to see President Vladimir Putin, and met U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and the EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, in Rome.

In the end, after weeks of delay, the report was mild in the extreme. Israeli settlement-building was criticized but not called illegal. The prime focus was on Palestinian incitement. One regional analyst described the overall impact as “banal.”

5. If Israel continues to build settlements, it's bye-bye two states...

Compared to the settlements, incitement is a minor issue and has no real bearing on whether a two-state solution is possible or not. I think it's strange that Palestinian incitement is singled out, when there's just as much incitement from the Israeli side. The quartet conveniently ignores the fact that the Israeli government is run by Arab-hating racists who incite against Palestinians every chance they get.

I don't know, it seems as if the Quartet has given up on the two-state solution. It's easier to let Netanyahu build a one-state reality than stopping him.

....to solving the conflict. Praising terror, paying terrorist families....topics you won't touch for some reason.

Those who don't care about peace and just want 2 states and "justice" (even if that means the end of Israel) will point to settlements, even though Israel would abandon settlements (as they did in Egypt) for a a real peace. That point seems to be lost on you too.

What's more important to you? Peace or 2 states?

8. Peace is of course more important - Israel can't live by the sword indefinitely.

But the thing is, even if Abbas and Netanyahu held hands and sang kumbaya, where would the Palestinian state be if there's nowhere to put it? I think that Netanyahu's response to the Quartet report shows that a Palestinian state can't happen, and that it's time to look for alternatives. 600.000 settlers can't be removed - there's simply no political will to do that.

9. It isn't Israel living by the sword - it's Palestinian "resistance" which BDS'ers support...

BDS'ers won't even talk about Abbas inciting against Jews, praising terror attacks, paying bounties to terrorists and their families. Or Hamas using children as human shields, militants...that's living by the sword.

If you're for peace, why is it so difficult for you to condemn any of that vile disgusting shit? Do you feel that acknowledging it and condemning it is doing Hasbara for Israel? That it's too much to ask to condemn the PA for encouraging the mass murder of Jews? Seriously?

Abbas' doctoral thesis was on Holocaust Denial. He routinely incites, praises, and rewards terror and he is against this Quartet report because he opposes legitimate criticism of his vile jew hating agenda. Why are you against it? Is it too tough on the Palestinians?

At the very least, I'd like to see you agree with the Quartet's harsh criticism of the PA/PLO. Is that too much to ask for?

It actually seems as if they've given up on the two-state solution, and if they don't believe in it, why should I?

You made an argument and I'm merely asking you to defend it.

The report criticized both sides. I can only guess that you didn't like how the report criticized Palestinian incitement and terror & that it was too harsh on the PA.

It's about fucking time and what an embarrassment that:

which saw for the first time a major international body cite Palestinian incitement to violence against Israel as a major obstacle to ending the conflict

Too busy blaming Israel for every ill in the world to notice the terrorism it faces every single day. And far too many on the left will hate this report for the same exact reason.
