The Israeli military has been criticized for appointing a rabbi who has disparaged female soldiers and once appeared to justify the rape of non-Jewish enemies.
The military says it summoned Rabbi Col. Eyal Karim on Tuesday over his past remarks after an outcry from lawmakers.
In a 2002 post on a Jewish website, Karim responded to a user asking whether Jewish law permits Israeli soldiers to rape enemy women. Karim said the Torah allowed soldiers to satisfy "evil inclinations" during wartime.
Karim later said he was not advocating rape, and the military said Tuesday that he denied ever saying that a "soldier is authorized to sexually harm a woman during war."
Opposition lawmaker Tzipi Livni told Channel 2 TV that Karim's views meant that "he cannot be the military rabbi."

Colonel Eyal Karim made several contentious remarks while answering reader's questions for the religious website Kipa while he was still a civilian.

Colonel Eyal Karim, who was appointed to the post of Chief Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces on Monday, served as an adviser for readers of the religious website Kipa while still a civilian.
Responses he gave in 2003 to questions about rape in wartime and whether women should serve in the IDF have been at the forefront of the criticism of his appointment from Knesset members and women's groups.
Below is a sample of some of the other advice he gave on subjects ranging from terrorism to homosexuality.
Asked, for example, whether terrorists should be shown pity, he responded: "Terrorists shouldn't be treated as humans because they're 'animals.' The rule that those who are merciful to the cruel will ultimately be cruel to the merciful applies to them."

(26,060 posts)to do with the OP. His comments about terrorists is harsh but big fucking deal. Show sympathy for those who cut heads off and blow up children? Knock yourself out. His comments about gays are disgusting. But the misquote in the OP is pretty standard bullshit from the likely suspects.

There Is No Need for the Israeli Army Rabbinate in 2016 Israel
The remarks about rape, gay people and killing wounded terrorists by Col. Eyal Karim, the army chief rabbi-designate, exposes the world he comes from.
Uri Misgav Jul 14, 2016
The truth? Its a good thing that Col. Eyal Karim was appointed the armys chief rabbi. The uproar that erupted surrounding his appointment is to be welcomed. It is affording the wider public a glimpse into the intellectual world of Karim and others like him.
Its okay to be appalled, but that in itself is not enough. This is a golden opportunity. We shouldnt be calling for Karims appointment to be revoked, but rather for doing away with the army rabbinate altogether. It has become another outpost for the national ultra-Orthodox camp. Karim is not alone. There are many more like him, within the defense establishment and the future enlistees of religious Zionism that operate outside the system but rub shoulders with and feed it (the hesder yeshivas and pre-army academies).
Grown, educated men, who hold senior ranks or influential teaching positions, who most seriously and learnedly consider such weighty questions as: Is it permissible for soldiers to rape good-looking non-Jewish women in wartime?; is it permissible to kill a wounded terrorist?; are homosexuals sick people?; is it permissible for a soldier to leave a ceremony at which women are singing?; why shouldnt women be permitted to testify in a rabbinical court, or to enlist?
Contrary to the claim of the settler right, which as usual has launched a very organized counterattack (while wailing about the campaign against it), these are not just theoretical, academic inquiries, but a way of life. Life according to religious laws that were composed thousands of years ago and never updated.
