Netanyahu urges rival Gantz to form unity government with him
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Thursday on his main rival, former general Benny Gantz, to join him in a broad, governing coalition after Israels election ended with no clear winner.
A spokeswoman for Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party, had no immediate response to the surprise offer from Netanyahu, head of the right-wing Likud party.
The change of strategy reflected Netanyahus weakened position after he failed again in Tuesdays election, which followed an inconclusive ballot in April, to secure a parliamentary majority.
During the election campaign, I called for the establishment of a right-wing government but to my regret, the election results show that this is impossible, Netanyahu said.

I'm guessing Bibi would be in charge.

So, he can avoid prosecution
I am certain the other reason why he's suggesting it is because if Gantz says no, then Leiberman will join Bibi's reichwing coalition

(24,574 posts)5. Problem with saying No is, Netanyahu will likely then become PM
With Leiberman's party Bibi can become PM
Leiberman wants that coalition
If Gantz says No, Leiberman and his party may agree to support Bibi

(20,546 posts)6. So, Gantz would be smarter to accept netanyahu's proposal?

(24,574 posts)7. It's complicated. A kind of Yes-No answer
By accepting he meets one of Leiberman's demands
If he agrees to it and says but w/o Netanyahu, Leiberman is likely to support that as well; esp since Leiberman has said he won't serve in a coalition with Netanyahu as PM
That would be my guess as to what he will probably do

will only agree to support Bibi if UTJ and Shas are not in the coalition, which would leave Likud short of a majority.
