I think Bibi is trying to do a 'wag the dog' to save his political career. He is hoping that by showing he is strong like this, he will do even better in the inevitable 5th election that I am sure will be coming soon.

(17,472 posts)There is an Arab pogrom going on in Lod right now.
Last night, under the influence of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, Arab residents began to gather in the streets shouting slogans for the liberation of Palestine, setting the streets on fire, throwing stones at Jews.
Today, 3 synagogues were burned by Arabs. Jews barricaded themselves in their homes and feared to get out out of fear of being murdered. Dozens of Jewish cars were set on fire as well.
In recent hours, police began evacuating Jews from their homes as there was an attempt to set on fire a residential building in the city. Theyre currently bringing an army into the city because the police are unable to take control of the terrorists on the streets.

(6,893 posts)Lapid will not be able to form a coalition, and Israel will go to a 5th election.
Mosby
(17,472 posts)I think Lapid has a real chance to pull it off, but it will be one bizarre coalition. Bennett might be PM at first, not sure that's an improvement.
sabbat hunter
(6,893 posts)some sort of support from the Israeli Arab parties. That would make things REAL interesting.
Mosby
(17,472 posts)The joint list doesn't want to join any coalition, including bibis.
They have to scrap this system but they're stubborn.
Israeli
(4,300 posts)He has manipulated this whole situation from day one .
Coalition talks have halted and no Arab party will join Lapid now and he can't form a coalition without them.
So Bibi wins once again .....at what cost ??

Bennett goes back to where Bennett belongs ideologically using the excuse of the current security
situation
So here you have your answer to your gut feeling :
But since Yamina's seven Knesset seats would still leave Netanyahu short of the 61 seats he needs for majority government, Israel would hold its fifth elections since April 2019.
sabbat hunter
(6,893 posts)in which President Rivlin calls for a 5th election and them actually being held. My guess is Bibi would want the elections ASAP, so he can ride the wave of his wagging the dog with the current conflict.
Israeli
(4,300 posts)to form a government.
If Lapid cant form a coalition by then a majority of lawmakers could try to endorse any Knesset member as prime minister.
If that 21-day period fails to yield a coalition, the country would be forced into the unprecedented scenario of a fifth election in two and a half years.
So anytime from July onwards .
sabbat hunter
(6,893 posts)Israel will see a 5th election. With the current situation I don't see Lapid being able to form a coalition. Bennett might try to cobble one together, but I doubt he will be able to either.
So ridiculous.
Israeli
(4,300 posts)Its not only ridiculous its heartbreaking and very depressing .
There are many young people giving up any hope of change and instead are
talking about leaving the country to build a new life elsewhere.

Bennett and Bibi are playing the power game , IMHO they are both as bad as each other and deserve each other .
Israeli
(4,300 posts)after many rumours and speculation since friday evening Bennett has joined Lapid officially today !!!!!
Nothing is 100% for sure yet but looks like after 12 years we are finally going to rid ourselves of Bibi .
sabbat hunter
(6,893 posts)is that it will be a mostly far right wing coalition with Yair Lapid from the center.
Israeli
(4,300 posts)Bennet is a religious right wing nut , like most of them , probably the closest you can get to
describing as far right although there are worse than him .
Saar is ex Likud, secular ..........again not far right .
Lieberman is secular Russian .....right wing like Saar but anti the orthodox control of our lives .
He is not far right either .
Then you have Lapid ......he is a secular centralist but not all of Yesh Atid are , none of them are
far right tho .
Then you have Gantz , Avoda and Meretz ..........again not far right .
Think you need to rethink
