Four Israelis were killed by Palestinian militants in the central West Bank on Tuesday, the latest in a series of tit-for-tat attacks that threaten to tip the region into a new, deadlier period of violence.
At least two gunmen opened fire at a hummus restaurant in a gas station outside of Eli, an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. One gunman was killed by an Israeli civilian at the scene, and a second was later shot dead by Israeli forces, according to the military; the army said it was conducting a manhunt for additional suspects and had closed parts of Route 60, the main highway running through the occupied West Bank.
The fatalities included Harel Masood, 21, from Yad Binyamin in central Israel; and Elisha Anteman, 17, and Ofer Feierman, 63, from Eli. Four others were injured in the attack, including one who was in serious condition.

An Israeli raid into one of the tensest cities in the occupied West Bank erupted Monday into a massive firefight, leaving at least five Palestinians dead and dozens wounded as the Israeli military struggled to rescue troops under heavy fire.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said of the five dead, two were in their teens and three in their 20s. At least 91 were wounded in the clashes, 23 of them in critical to severe condition, the ministry said. Eight Israeli troops were injured and successfully evacuated, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Israeli Air Force attack helicopters opened fire from the skies over Jenin to help Israeli troops leave the city, the IDF said.
About 11 hours after Palestinian sources first said the incursion began, IDF international spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht told CNN that Israeli troops and vehicles were out of Jenin.
Hecht earlier said the soldiers were not trapped and had moved to other protected vehicles involved in the extraction.
He had noted at least five vehicles were stuck, adding: Its not looking good. Its going to take a few hours. Its going to be pretty harsh.
It was the first time since the Second Intifada that Israeli helicopters had opened fire while evacuating wounded troops, Israel Army Radio reported. The Second Intifada a major Palestinian uprising ended in 2005.

By TOI STAFF and AGENCIES
Israeli settler vigilantes tore through several Palestinian towns in the West Bank following a deadly shooting attack on a nearby settlement Tuesday night, setting cars and fields on fire, vandalizing homes and terrorizing residents in a grim repeat of an incident some termed a pogrom earlier this year.
Palestinians in Luban a-Sharqiya, Huwara, Beit Furik, Burin and other towns south of Nablus in the northern West Bank said carloads of settlers rampaged through the villages Tuesday night, hurling stones and setting cars, fields, homes and other property ablaze.
Three Israelis were arrested over the attacks, Israels Ynet news reported.
Nablus official Ghassan Daghlas said 34 Palestinians were injured, most of them from tear gas, and at least 140 vehicles set ablaze, including an ambulance.
The rampage was set off by an attack hours earlier in which two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a hummus restaurant and gas station in the settlement of Eli, killing four Israelis, including two 17-year-old boys, and injuring four others. One of the terrorists was shot dead at the scene by an armed Israeli civilian, while the second fled and was killed some two hours later by special forces.
Hours after the attack, Israeli settlers streamed through Palestinian towns, trying to torch property and smashing cars with stones, according to locals, with some of the assaults captured on video.

That section of Mishpatim develops the idea of compensatory damages, Rambam wrote: "there was never any rabbi, from the time of Moses...who ruled, based on 'an eye for an eye', that he who blinds another should himself be blinded".

Palestinian killed in unclear circumstances as settlers rampage in West Bank town
12 wounded in attack on Turmus Ayya; police say officers shot suspect who allegedly fired at troops; dozens also storm Palestinian village of Urif; no reports of arrests

Hundreds of Israeli settlers tore through the Palestinian town of Turmus Ayya on Wednesday afternoon, setting homes, cars, and fields on fire and terrorizing residents shortly after Israeli victims of a Palestinian terror shooting in the West Bank were buried.
Hours later, dozens of settlers also attacked the West Bank village of Urif. The incidents came after riots against other Palestinian communities on Tuesday.
The Palestinian Authority health ministry said one Palestinian was killed in Turmus Ayya and another 12 were wounded during the attack by settlers and clashes with Israeli troops. At least four were wounded by gunfire, including one listed in serious condition, the ministry said.

Nothing in the English newspapers that I can quote so far but our Hebrew news channels are full of the strongest condemnation
coming from the US regarding these " appalling " incidents .
