Israel/Palestine
Related: About this forumWho Palestinian prisoners are
I kept asking my husband who the Palestinian prisoners are, what their charges are as the exchange is being discussed because he watches more news than do.
Im sickened to learn that 3,000 of the 8,300 Palestinians in Israels prisons are held in what Israel calls administrative detention. This means they are held without knowing what the charges are against them and without any ongoing legal remedies, any legal process.
I can only imagine the frustration, fear, growing anger, rage at this Kafka-Esque situation.

(4,251 posts)Its my understanding that Palestinian children and women were rounded up and arrested in the days after the Hamas attack. The majority of charges included throwing rocks and harming regional security. Those dont seem very just.
Its also my understanding that Israel routinely arrested Palestinians with no charges, no legal remedies for years before the attack.
Im not justifying the attack but I am seeking to understand the circumstances of Palestinians before the attack.

(11,249 posts)Had the Israeli women and children who were indiscriminately abducted, kidnapped and hauled into Gaza been held with no charges and no legal remedies? Is the Pope catholic?
Does Israel routinely takes Palestinians hostage? What makes you think that Palestinians were "rounded up"? Assuming your article has grounds to claim that the majority of charges included throwing rocks and harming regional security (which they have yet to back up), what are the minority of the charges? Do they perchance include violence that exceeds mere rock throwing? Yes, they do: "Others are listed as detained for supporting illegal terror organizations, illegal weapons charges, incitement, and at least two accusations of attempted murder". And why is rock throwing not a just and legitimate charge? Have you ever had a rock thrown at you?
You may not be justifying the attack, but you are definitely attempting to draw parallels between innocent hostages and accused criminals. And that is obscene.

(4,251 posts)It seems to me that the future solutions can only be found in understanding the recent (10 years? 30?) past as experienced by everyone involved.
I see the obvious is a 2-state solution, then something similar to Rwandas Truth and Reconciliation initiative.
The CNN article doesnt say how long the Israeli government has arrested and imprisoned Palestinians without charges of legal remedies. It seems important to know, to stop the injustice of that practice. I admit that, as the mother of a daughter in law enforcement and a son in federal prison, that particular piece of information disturbed me greatly.

(11,249 posts)will only obfuscate your understanding of what's been happening before the Hamas attack, and in no way will diminish this atrocity or excuse the violence.
Two different issues. Even so, you cannot understand what's been happening in the Middle East without addressing the issue of terrorism. and what role funding of terrorism by the various regional players plays in its proliferation and the normalization of antisemitism.

Nothing compared in my posts since but I continue to be concerned about Palestinian prisoners, especially children.

(36,187 posts)The Palestinian cause per Hamas was being ignored, Arab states were letting their cause fall off their radar. And even Sa'udiyya was probably going to have a rapprochement with Israel. At the same time, the West Bank was an issue that nobody seemed to care about.
And it didn't help that just a few weeks prior Israel had increased the number of workers allowed in from Gaza. Meaning that relations with the Gazan population were working towards acceptance and normalization.
But they were clear--the status quo was shifting away from *their* agenda and had been for well over a year so something needed to be done.
That "something" was 10/7.
What was happening in the weeks or 2-3 months prior to 10/7 can't cause the planning that started over a year before.
What Lion's Den and its pups were producing also can't be discounted.
Hamas gave their reasons. It just doesn't fit the narrative. Instead of "all the truth that's fit to print" becomes "all the truth that fits we print."
It's like what Hamas wants--an Islamic theocracy in Palestine. Those defending it pretend Hamas doesn't have this goal--or like Israel for the last 4-5 years, think that Hamas was tamed by the need to govern wisely.
